Some Tips For Navigating (an often confronting) Valentine's Day

We have a love/hate relationship with Valentine's Day. The Love part of us loves any excuse to celebrate love through sex, play, and intimate connection. The Hate part of us despises the idea that there is only one special day and/or a cookie-cutter way to celebrate love.

Valentine's Day can also be super confronting for a lot of folks. It's as if our hearts are under a magnifying glass and we are now seeing and questioning everything. Who loves me? How much am I loved? How do I share my love with the world? What are the ways that I hide and/or protect my heart?

So with all that said, our advice is to make Valentine's Day a day for MORE LOVE YOUR WAY. And only YOU get to decide what that looks like. Your life is not a rom-com movie. You don't have to experience life and love the same way as everyone else. YOU get to make the rules (while respecting other people's agency and consent, of course).

And if you are in need of some inspiration for some non-conventional ideas for this Hallmark holiday:

Tips For Couples

1. Get artsy and make a vision board of your future life together. Have fun with it while inspiring all that you wish to create side by side

2. Re-live or re-enact your first date all over again. Re-tell the story. Set the scene. Pretend like it's the first day you met and do it all over again

3. Share your love with others. So many hearts feel unloved and alone. Perhaps this is an opportunity to share your love with them? Visit an animal shelter and play with the animals together. Spend time with elderly folks. Pamper your dear friend who just went through a heartbreak. Make this day about an expansive love that goes beyond your partnership

Tips For Singles

1. Remember the Valentine's boxes from elementary school? Gather with friends for a craft night. Decorate Valentine's Day boxes and then write notes about what you love about one another and then drop them into your friend's Love Box.

2. Organize a single person's pub/brewery/wine bar crawl. Mix and mingle with other single-and-fabulous folks. But be sure to drink lots of water as well :)

3. Do #3 from above. The world needs more love. If you are feeling on top of the world with plenty of love to give, then share it! And if you are feeling down or alone, then reach out to other beings in need of love and connection.
